Like the Wind

Like the Wind
by M. F. B. Porter

“Like the Wind” -- You call me.
Did you think I would sound like the wind?
Did you think that the wind would somehow embody my spirit?
Is my spirit like the wind?

“Like the Wind” -- You call me.
Do I blow away in the wind?
Was I supposed to be light as a feather on the wind?
Am I a feather or the wind?

“Like the Wind” -- You call me.
Am I angry like the wind?
Do I howl like the lonely wind?
Am I a wolf or the wind?

“Like the Wind” -- You call me.
Am I to take comfort in the wind?
Was I supposed to understand the wind?
Should I understand you or the wind?

“Like the Wind” -- You call me.
Am I soft like the wind?
Or is the wind harsh?
Am I soft or am I harsh?

“Like the Wind” -- You call me.
Was I supposed to keep secrets like the wind?
Or can an empty thing keep at all?
Is the wind empty, or am I?
